HIS 222 - American Religious History

(3) H

This course surveys the diverse manifestations of religion in American history by examining how the religious landscape in the U.S. evolved over time. Students will explore how religious traditions interacted with American social relations, the economy and politics and the ways in which these interactions shaped the religious ideas and rituals of Americans? We will consider a variety of developments and their implications for American democracy such as: orthodoxy vs pluralism, church and state in a democratic society, immigration and globalization, and finally the variety of religious voices that have intersected with American politics from Malcolm X to the moral majority.
