Department Mission and Program Assessment

The Department of Africana Studies at the University of Michigan-Flint prepares students for the ever-demanding need to engage and function successfully in a diverse society. In addition to providing an understanding of the histories, experiences, and contributions of the peoples of Africa and the African Diaspora, the Department supports a well-rounded education in the tradition of the liberal arts and sciences. The range of course offerings includes history, literature, political science, drama, sociology, and economics. Africana Studies is a multi-disciplinary unit dedicated to the training of cultural workers, teachers, human resources and public relations officers who would help transform communities into environments that are democratic, patrons of the arts, and economically sound. The spirit of inquiry and excellence in scholarship are the hallmarks of the Department’s approach to the various disciplines that comprise Africana Studies. The Department participates in the University-wide effort to assess its academic programs. Programs in Africana Studies

Two concentration programs are offered, both leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree: the General Program in Africana Studies and the Honors Program in Africana Studies . A Minor in Africana Studies and an Africana Studies Certificate Program are also available.
