Department Mission and Program Assessment

The Department of Africana Studies at the University of Michigan-Flint prepares students for the ever-demanding need to engage and function successfully in a diverse society. It is a multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary field that provides a well-rounded education in the tradition of the liberal arts and sciences. A degree in Africana Studies will deepen students’ knowledge of Africa and the African Diaspora, and their understanding of the histories, experiences, and contributions of the peoples of Africa and people of African descent. The range of Africana Studies course offerings includes history, literature, political science, drama, sociology, and economics. The Department participates in a University-wide effort to assess student learning.  Information on assessment plans, including goals, methods and outcomes is available at http://assessment.umflint.edu.
