CIT Faculty and Staff List

The College of Innovation & Technology (CIT) offers undergradute curriculum which integrates practical hands-on learning with deep theoretical understanding. By capitalizing on UM-Flint’s robust liberal arts foundation, CIT undergraduate programs are meticulously designed to prepare students for diverse careers in fields related to Engineering and Technology, Computing, and Science. CIT graduates are fully equipped with the skills and knowledge needed for rewarding careers aligned with the evolving demands of Industry 4.0.

Program Assessment

The College of Innovation & Technology actively assesses its academic programs as part of a University-wide committment to providing academic excellence. Our Mechanical Engineering major is ABET-accredited, and CIT’s Biochemistry and Green Chemistry majors hold accreditation from the American Chemical Society.

CIT Undergraduate Student Support

Three-Tiered Student Support Model

CIT operates under a three-tiered student support model, comprised of Academic Advisors, one or more faculty mentors, and CIT Career Advisors.

Academic advisors support CIT undergraduates from Orientation to Graduation, ensuring they meet university, college, and major degree requirements. Serving as advocates, the advisors provide expertise in campus resources, assist with curriculum updates, and offer information on available services, including scholarships, disability support, career services, and counseling. Academic advisors specialize in degree plans, track degree progress, and ensure timely graduation. Students are assigned an academic advisor upon admission into CIT.

In addition to Academic Advisors, CIT students also work with one or more Faculty Mentors who are experts in their respective fields. Faculty Mentors play a pivotal role, discussing the industry landscape, job prospects, and relevant research with students. They guide individuals in selecting challenging classes aligned with their learning objectives, assist in connecting students to research opportunities, and offer insights into curriculum changes and continuing education.

Complementing the support from Academic Advisors and Faculty Mentors, CIT Career Advisors play a crucial role in guiding students towards successful professional careers. They provide personalized guidance through one-on-one consultations and workshops, empowering students with essential skills such as resume building, job search technology utilization, crafting and delivering elevator pitches, self-marketing strategies, and general job search etiquette. Furthermore, CIT Career Advisors actively cultivate connections with employers, industry professionals, and alumni, establishing a robust network to assist students in searching for and securing co-op or internship opportunities aligned with their career goals.

Academic Advisors, Faculty Mentors and Career Advisors are integral members of a student’s success team, providing guidance on discipline-specific activities, networking, and professional organizations. Regular consultations with Academic Advisors, Faculty Mentors, and CIT Career Advisors ensure that CIT students receive comprehensive, tailored support for seamless navigation of their academic and professional endeavors.

Mandatory Advising

All CIT students are required to attend Mandatory Advising sessions each semester. Registration holds will be applied to student accounts on the Friday before Early Registration (refer to the Academic Calendar for specific dates). To avoid delays in registration, students must complete their Mandatory Advising before the deadline. Once a hold is in place, it can only be removed after the student’s Mandatory Advising is complete.

Acknowledging the diverse needs of students at different points in their academic journey, CIT has structured Mandatory Advising to include tailored meetings with Academic Advisors, Faculty Mentors, and CIT Career Advisors. While each student’s advising experience is personalized, the chart below provides an example of the Mandatory Advising process within CIT.

Career Development

CIT Professional Career Development (PCD) Requirement

CIT Professional Career Development (PCD) is a mandatory program for all CIT students to ensure thorough career preparation prior to graduation. This program is facilitated through Canvas, and students will be automatically enrolled.

Within a CIT student’s first three years within the college, they will begin preparing for their future employment by engaging with the material in the CIT PCD Canvas Course. Students will earn PCD points, which are accumulated by completing various career-related Enrichment Tasks throughout the semester. Different Enrichment Tasks are worth different point values, allowing students to pick and choose the tasks that most closely align with their career development needs.

Examples of Enrichment Tasks Include -

  • Actively engaging with and reviewing course material in the PCD course.
  • Attending meetings with a CIT Career Advisor.
  • Participating in PCD Workshops to expand knowledge related to job searches.
  • Attending employer events, such as Career Fairs or Informational Sessions.
  • Actively researching, applying, and securing a co-op or internship site.

Students will have successfully completed the program after earning at least 30 PCD points, an estimated 10 PCD points per semester.

Co-op/Internship for Academic Credit

Upon successful completion of the PCD program, students interested in obtaining academic credit for an internship are required to participate in the CIT Co-op/Internship Orientation. This program is designed to provide students with the information necessary to earn academic credit during their co-op or internship experience.
