Music Education Program (BME)

The student who desires to teach music in an elementary or secondary school will be best served by completing the Bachelor of Music Education program. Completion of the BME requirements and successfully passing the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification leads to certification to teach K-12 music in Michigan.

Prerequisites.

  1. Admission into the Music Education Program, which requires a UM-Flint grade point average of 2.75 overall and a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 in music courses.

  2. Meeting all requirements for admission into the Education Program, including the Basic Skills Test portion of the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification. Students may apply when they have earned 55 credits. There are two admission periods each year; deadlines for applying are January 15 and September 15.

Requirements.

  1. Music theory (18 credits).

    MUS 141 , MUS 142 , MUS 143 , MUS 144 , MUS 241 , MUS 242 , MUS 243 .

    B.   Music history (9 credits).

    MUS 261 , MUS 262 MUS 361 .

    C.   Performance (33-34 credits).

    1.   Applied Music (16 credits). MUS 151 , MUS 152 , MUS 251 , MUS 252 , MUS 351 , MUS 352 MUS 451 , MUS 452 . Attendance in performance class is required.

    2.   Performance ensembles (7 credits). Students enrolled in Applied Music must enroll concurrently in an ensemble corresponding to the Applied Music section, either MUS 201 /MUS 401  (Wind Symphony) or MUS 210 /MUS 410  (Chorale). Participation in other ensembles (Jazz Ensemble, Chamber Singers, etc.) is encouraged.

    3.   Secondary instruments (6-7 credits). From MUS 117 , MUS 118, MUS 121 , MUS 124 , MUS 125 , MUS 126 , MUS 127 , MUS 128 .Instrumental majors elect 7 credits; vocal majors elect 6 credits, including MUS 117 .

    4.   Conducting (4 credits). MUS 371 , MUS 372 .

    5.   Students must pass the departmental Piano Proficiency Exam. MUS 132  is strongly recommended.

    D.   Music education (13-14 credits). MUS 365  or MUS 369 , MUS 380 , MUS 381 , MUS 382 , MUS 383  (for instrumentalists), MUS 232  or MUS 366  (for vocalists).

    E.   Education (24 credits).

    EDE 300  or EDS 300 , EDE 302  or EDS 302 , EDE 360  or EDS 360 , EDE 499  or EDS 499 EDE 469  (5 cr.), EDS 469  (5 cr.), ENG 410 /EDR 445 .

    F.   Additional requirements.

    1.  PSY 100  (3 cr.)

    2.   Approved course in first aid including adult and child CPR.

    3.   MUS 170 , MUS 226  (6 cr.)

    G.   All general education requirements  of the College of Arts and Sciences.
