Chemistry General Program (BA)

The Bachelor of Arts program in Chemistry is designed for students who want to gain a general background in chemistry, to prepare themselves for entry into medical, dental, osteopathic or veterinary school, or to make use of the science of chemistry in their careers. It is not intended for students preparing to be professional scientists or planning to enter graduate study in any of the chemical sciences. Typical career tracks for someone with a BA in Chemistry might involve health care, scientific writing, library science/chemical literature, journalism, patent law, sales for a technical corporation, industrial marketing/management, or the pursuit of an advanced degree in a field such as business administration, library science or law.

Requirements.

  1. CHM 260 , CHM 261 , CHM 262 , CHM 263  or CHM 265 , CHM 310 , CHM 330 , CHM 331 , CHM 332 , CHM 333 , CHM 340 , CHM 341 CHM 344 CHM 366 , CHM 367  (2 cr.), CHM 410  (28 credits)
  2. MTH 121 , MTH 122  (8 credits).
  3. PHY 143 , PHY 145 or PHY 243 PHY 245  (8-10 credits). 
  4. Completion of one of the following concentrations (20-36 credits):

    Chemistry General Concentration (20-26 credits)
    1.  Advanced electives (8-10 credits).  One of the following groups:  
         a.  CHM 380 , CHM 381 , CHM 382 CHM 460 
         b.  CHM 440  or CHM 442  or CHM 444 , CHM 443 CHM 472 ,   or CHM 499  (1 cr.).
         c.  CHM 460 CHM 461 or CHM 485 , two from: CHM 430 CHM 432 CHM 468 .
         d.  CHM 450 , CHM 451 , CHM 452 , CHM 453 .
    2.  Cognate science courses (12-16 credits).  One of the sequences below, plus an elective from the same area with the chosen courses as prerequisites.
         a.  BIO 111 , BIO 113 , one from: BIO 326 BIO 327 BIO 328 .
         b.  GEO 150 , GEO 151 .  

    Pre-Medical Concentration (39 credits)
    1.  CHM 450 , CHM 451 , CHM 452 , CHM 453  (10 cr.).
    2.  BIO 111 , BIO 113 BIO 326 BIO 328 , BIO 135  or BIO 405 BIO 406  (20 cr.).
    3.  PSY 100 PSY 315  (6 cr.).
    4.  SOC 100  (3 cr.).
    5.  Electives, chosen with the advisor, which may include: BIO 167 BIO 168 , BIO 301 , BIO 418 , BIO 419 BIO 425 BIO 432 , BIO 433 , BIO 445 PSY 309 PSY 316 HCR 362 , PHL 168 .

    Pre-Dental Concentration (36 credits)
    1.  CHM 450 , CHM 451 , CHM 452 , CHM 453  (10 cr.).
    2.  BIO 111 , BIO 113 BIO 326 BIO 328 , BIO 135  or BIO 405 BIO 406  (20 cr.)
    3.  PSY 100 , SOC 100  (6 cr.).
    5.  Electives, chosen with the advisor, which may include:  BIO 167 BIO 168 , BIO 418 , BIO 419 BIO 425 , BIO 433  , BIO 445 BUS 110 

    Pre-Pharmacy Concentration (30 credits)
    Advisor:  Jessica Tischler
    1.  CHM 450 , CHM 451 , CHM 452 , CHM 453  (10 cr.).
    2.  BIO 111 , BIO 167 BIO 168 , BIO 135  or BIO 405 BIO 406 BIO 326  (20 cr.). 
    3.  Electives, chosen with the advisor and based on where admission is sought, which may include:  BIO 301 , BIO 328 , BIO 432 , other upper-level anatomy courses, COM 200 COM 210 CSC 121 ECN 201 ECN 202 PHL 202 POL 120 PSY 100 SOC 100 .
      
  5. All requirements of the College of Arts and Sciences Bachelor of Arts  degree, including  General Education requirements , additional BA distribution requirements, and completion of at least 124 credits.
