Visual Communication Program (BFA)


The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Communication undertakes the preparation of students for careers in the world of communication arts. The program encompasses a series of art foundation and history courses that emphasize technical, theoretical, and intellectual skills. The development and maturation of the student progresses through an acquisition of skills focused within contemporary media practice and concludes with a choice of area concentrations in either graphic design or photography.

Requirements. Completion of 124 credit hours as follows:

  1. All UM-Flint graduation requirements , including College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) General Education requirements  .
  2. Art history and theory (15 credits).
    ARH 111  , ARH 112 , ARH 411 ; ART 160 ; COM 200 .
  3. Studio foundations (15 credits). 
    ART 126 ART 131 , ART 132 ART 141 ART 252 .
  4. Studio Art concentration (32-33 credits).  One of the following:
    Design Concentration (33 credits).
    ARH 140 ART 232 , ART 324 , ART 329 ART 330 , ART 335 , ART 342 , ART 347 ART 376 , ART 401  (cap), ART 406 .
    Photography Concentration (33 credits).
    ARH 215 ; ART 116 , ART 214 , ART 216 , ART 218 , ART 302 , ART 304 , ART 401  (cap), ART 402 , ART 404 
    Interaction Arts Concentration (33 credits).

    COM 241 ; ART 204 , ART 232 , ART 335 , ART 346 , ART 347 , ART 348 , ART 376 , ART 377 , ART 391 , ART 401  (cap).
  5. Program electives (9 credits). 
    Additional courses approved by the advisor. 
  6. Other requirements.
    1.   Completion of at least 124 credits, including at least 33 at the 300 level or above, with a minimum overall GPA of 2.75 or higher.
    2.   At least 15 credits of studio art taken at the University of Michigan-Flint.
    3. Presentation and review of a design portfolio, with pass or failure included in ART 401  grade.
