The University of Michigan-Flint/Hurley Medical Center RN to BSN Program is designed for the student who is a graduate of a state-approved nursing program and already holds a license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the United States.
Admission
Persons interested in applying for admission to the program should contact the Department of Nursing office to obtain the appropriate forms and information. An application to the University must be completed and returned to the University of Michigan-Flint Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Official copies of transcripts must be sent to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Recent graduates of Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) programs are allowed to be admitted and begin the curriculum, but proof of Registered Nurse (RN) licensure must be provided to the Department of Nursing in order to progress into the Nursing Core Curriculum courses and complete all degree requirements. The University of Michigan-Flint has a revolving admission policy, which allows prospective students to be admitted in Fall, Winter, Spring or Summer. Before applying, out-of-state students, or those who may relocate during the program, should contact the Department of Nursing to confirm that the University of Michigan-Flint is authorized to offer distance education in the student’s state of residence. The Department of Nursing, in conjunction with the Office of Extended Learning, will determine the University’s status in that state.
RNs must have earned at least a 2.75 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) in their associate nursing program as well as submit proof of RN license licensure, a satisfactory Criminal Background Check, and a signed Clinical Student Disclosure Statement and Essential Abilities/Honor Code Pledge Form. Students will need additional funds for annual tuberculosis and drug testing, medical equipment, background checks, health forms and textbooks. Students need the use of an automobile to travel to their clinical assignments. Transportation to and from clinical agencies is the responsibility of the student. Additional requirements may include a valid driver’s license and car insurance. Requirements vary by clinical agency. A pre-entrance physical examination, immunizations, CPR certification, and health insurance will be required at the student’s expense. Students must meet health requirements and background check requirements as mandated by the clinical sites. Students who do not provide verification of all required forms by the announced deadlines will not be permitted to elect a nursing clinical course. Students must earn grades of C+ (2.3) or better in all prerequisite, NUR, and NSC coursework to fulfill degree requirement.
Credit by Examination
The earning of credit by examination (CBE) is based on the premise that the knowledge and skills acquired through course completion may be validated in other ways. Passing a standardized examination validates mastery of subject matter of a course. Credit may be earned by successful completion of the examinations for NSC 209 , NSC 210 and NSC 235 . Each examination may be taken no more than twice. If a student does not pass an exam on the second attempt, enrollment in the course is required. There is a fee for each exam attempt.
