Online learning at UM-Flint is supported by the Office of Extended Learning. Online courses may be fully online (W sections) or offered in mixed mode (M sections), which require some visits to the campus or off-campus site.  There is a per-credit convenience fee for online and mixed mode courses.  (Check the Cashier/Student Accounts web page at https://www.umflint.edu/studentaccounts/tuition_fees.) All academic online and mixed mode courses are taught by UM-Flint faculty–usually the same faculty who teach the face-to-face sections–using the Web-based Blackboard learning management system.

Online and Mixed-mode Academic Programs

IMPORTANT:  Colleges and universities must be approved by each state in which it offers distance education.  Out-of-state learners should go to www.umflint.edu/oel/online-state-authorization to check UM-Flint’s authorization status to offer online programs in their respective states, and to get state-specific information on professional licensing requirements, refund and notification policies, complaint procedures, etc.

Other:  The University of Michigan Flint and Dearborn campuses collaborate to allow students to take psychology courses online from the other institution as a guest student.  This agreement allows students to take advantage of both schedules in order to meet their program needs.  In addition, it allows students to include the course(s) in their financial aid package at their home institution.  See the full list of courses at:  http://www.umflint.edu/oel/um-flintum-dearborn-collaboration

Information for Out-of-State Students

Colleges and universities must be approved by each state in which the school offers distance education.  Out-of-state, online students who intend to access their courses online from within their own states should go to www.umflint.edu/oel/online-state-authorization to check UM-Flint’s authorization status in their specific state.  Participating in a program not authorized by your state could result in loss of transferability of credits.  Out-of-state students should pay special attention to information regarding:

  • The need for additional authorization from professional licensing agencies, such as boards of nursing and departments of education.  Participating in a program not authorized by your profession’s licensing board could result in loss of licensing eligibility.

  • State-specific refund policies.

  • The process for filing a student complaint.
