PTP 820 - Quantitative Research Methods


Admission to the Ph.D. program in physical therapy or consent of instructor. (4).

Overview of the fundamental concepts of research methods including research questions, background and significance, designs, subjects, variables, measurement, and statistical issues. Exploration of quantitative research designs with the emphasis to answer research questions related to the diagnosis, prognosis, tests and measures, interventions, and outcomes in physical therapy practice. Critical analysis and appraisal of cross-sectional, cohort, case-control, observational, randomized trial, alternative randomized, and non-randomized studies, studies of tests and measures, and secondary data analysis. Evaluation of strategies to address ethical issues, data management, and quality control throughout the implementation of a research study. Application of scientific writing principles through an in-depth literature review and comparisons of different methods for dissemination and communication of research evidence. Graded ABCDE/Y.
