Introduction to the professional field of history known as historic preservation, with a focus on understanding why and how people seek to preserve, conserve and protect buildings, objects, landscapes and other artifacts of historic significance; rooted in the interdisciplinary field of the digital humanities with particular attention to the role of technology in understanding the built past. Students will become familiar with the ways technology is used to document, evaluate and preserve the built past through web-based inventories of historic structures, GIS documentation and the application of modern technical tools to preserve historic structures.
