Introduction to thinking about region and culture as they are linked to historical, political and cultural practices and processes.  A critical approach to region and area studies, with regional focus reflecting instructor expertise - often Africa, Latin America, or the Indian Ocean world.  Topics may include kinship, political-economic contexts, performance traditions, and nation, race and ethnicity, as well as gender, mobility, religion and language.
