Study of the intersection of culture and law, with attention to forms of authority, legitimacy, and power embedded within different legal systems. Consideration of the relationship of law to the cultural aspects of economics, religion, social organization, and other features of society. Anthropological understandings of the origins of law and legal concepts and processes like contract, customary and common law, conflict and contestation, human rights, and sovereignty. Not open to students with credit for ANT 354. Graded ABCDE
