Origins and development of contemporary African fiction, including the African oral heritage and works of selected writers from different African geographic regions. The unique role and the experiences of the writer in modern African societies; critical reception of African literature within and outside of the African continent; influences of colonialism, nationalism, and feminism/womanism are examined.
