English Teacher’s Certificate Program (BA)

The Teacher’s Certificate Program (TCP) is designed to meet the needs of future teachers of secondary school English.

Completion of the English TCP major and a TCP minor in another area is required.  Note the Michigan Department of Education does not allow a course to be counted toward the credit requirements of both a major and a minor.

Professional requirements are to be completed in three phases, in sequence, during which the student creates an Individual Major Portfolio.  A minimum grade of C (2.0) is required in each course.

In addition, for progression from phase to phase and completion of the program, minimum GPAs of B- (2.7) or higher in the major, the minor, the professional coursework and overall, are required.

Discipline-Specific Requirements.

At least eighteen credits in English at the 300 level or above, including no more than six from ENG 202 , ENG 203  and ENG 208 , and distributed as follows:

  1. Literature (18 credits).
    1. ENG 241 .
    2. British literature. One from ENG 301 ENG 303 , ENG 307 /MES 307 , ENG 310 , ENG 312 , ENG 317 , ENG 318 , ENG 319 , ENG 326 , ENG 327 , ENG 329 , ENG 330 , ENG 331 , ENG 332 , ENG 333 , ENG 334 , ENG 385 , ENG 386 .
    3. Shakespeare. ENG 315  or ENG 316 .
    4. American literature. One from ENG 353 , ENG 355 , ENG 356 , ENG 357 , ENG 364 , ENG 368 ENG 431 , ENG 432 , ENG 433 , ENG 434 .
    5. American ethnic literature. One from ENG 213 , ENG 215 , ENG 374 , ENG 375 , or a course approved by the English Department.
    6. An additional literature course at the 300 level or above.
  2. Writing ( 6 credits).
    1. One from: ENG 252 ,ENG 260 , ENG 296 , ENG 298 ,ENG 309 ENG 336 , ENG 338 , ENG 340 , ENG 345 , ENG 354 , ENG 363 ENG 391 , ENG 392 , ENG 393 , ENG 399 , ENG 400 LIN 306 .
    2. SEC 446 .
  3. Linguistics (6 credits).
    ENG 200 /LIN 200 , ENG 244 /LIN 244 ; both taken as Linguistics.
  4. Electives in English at the 200 level or above (9 credits).
    The following courses are recommended as excellent preparation for teaching English: a course in women’s literature chosen from: ENG 228 , ENG 337 , or a course approved by the English Department; further courses in American or British literature or writing; a course in Greek and Roman literature chosen from ENG 204 , ENG 207 ; ENG 447 /LIN 447 ; ENG 351 .
  5. Completion of Individual Major Portfolio.
  6. All requirements of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Bachelor of Arts  degree, including General Education requirements  and additional BA distribution requirements.

Professional Requirements.

  1. Course requirements.
    Phase I - Foundational (15 credits).  ENG 112  or EHS 120 ; PSY 100 ; HIS 220  or HIS 221 ; SEC 200 , SEC 201 .
    Phase II - Pre-professional (12 credits).  PSY 313 , SEC 320 , SEC 445 ; a course in the history or culture of an American ethnic group from:  AFA 270 /SOC 270 , AFA 331 , AFA 334 /HIS 334 , EDE 305 , ENG 213 , ENG 374 , EDE 432 /PUB 438 .
    Phase III - Professional.  (18-21 credits).  SEC 330 ; SEC 347 , minor methods course (if required); SEC 469 , SEC 499 .
  2. Transition requirements.
    Acceptance to Phase II.
    1. Completion of at least 55 credits (junior standing), including at least 18 credits in the major and 12 in the minor.
    2. Interview with the TCP advisor, to include discussion of the Dispositions Inventory and pieces for the Individual Major Portfolio.
    3. Successful completion of the MTTC Professional Readiness Examination (PRE).
    4. Completion and acceptance of an application to Phase II, including a felony/misdemeanor form.

Acceptance to Phase III.

  1. Completion of at least 85 credits (senior standing), including at least 90% of the major and minor requirements.
  2. Interview with the TCP advisor, to include discussion of the Dispositions Inventory and pieces for the Individual Major Portfolio.
  3. Completion and acceptance of an application to Phase III, including a felony/misdemeanor form.

Recommendation for teacher certification.

  1. Completion of at least 124 credits, including all major and minor requirements.
  2. Exit interview with the TCP advisor, to include discussion of the completed Individual Major Portfolio and results of the Student Teaching Evaluation.
  3. Completion of the MTTC (Michigan Test for Teacher Certification) subject area test in the major and minor (where applicable), with a passing score on the major area test.
  4. Completion of an advanced and valid course in first aid and adult and child CPR from an approved provider.
  5. Completion of all paperwork necessary for certification, including a felony/misdemeanor form.
