Research Psychology Program (BS)

Psychology Department information  

The Bachelor of Science Program in Research Psychology is designed for students who are preparing for doctoral level study or professional medical education.  The curriculum is intended to develop in students the general skills and knowledge of psychology principles expected in research-oriented graduate programs.  The general track prepares students for study in areas such as animal behavior, biological psychology, clinical psychology, cognition, developmental psychology, learning, social psychology, personality, and other areas emphasizing empirical research.  The pre-medical track is tailored to serve students interested in attending medical school.

Prerequisites. MTH 111  (MTH 120  strongly recommended for those planning to attend graduate or medical school).

Requirements.

  1. All requirements of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS)  Bachelor of Science degree, including General Education requirements .  General education requirements in the natural sciences may not include courses in psychology.
  2. Completion of one of the following concentrations:
    General Concentration
    Thirty-eight credits in psychology including:
    1.  Foundation courses (15 credits)PSY 100 , PSY 319 , PSY 322 , PSY 323 .
    2.  Core courses (15 credits). PSY 309 , PSY 313 , PSY 315 , PSY 316 , PSY 317 .
    3.  Advanced research courses (8 credits)PSY 329  (taken twice).
    Pre-Medical Concentration
    1.  Psychology (38 credits).
         
    a.  Foundation courses (15 credits).  PSY 100 , PSY 319 PSY 322 , PSY 323 .
         b.  Core courses (15 credits). PSY 309 , PSY 313 , PSY 315 , PSY 316 , PSY 317 .
        
    c.  Advanced research courses (8 credits)PSY 329  (taken twice).
    2.  Biology (16 credits).  BIO 111 , BIO 113 , BIO 326 , BIO 328 .
    3.  Chemistry (19-22 credits).  CHM 260 , CHM 261 , CHM 262 , CHM 263 , CHM 330 , CHM 331 , CHM 332 , CHM 333 , CHM 350  or CHM 450  and CHM 452 
    4.  Physics (8-10 credits).  PHY 143 PHY 145  or PHY 243 PHY 245 .
    5.  Mathematics (0-4 credits).  MTH 120 , or placement into MTH 121 .
    6.  Health care administration (3 credits).  HCR 362 .
    7.  Philosophy (3 credits).  PHL 168 .
    8.  Sociology (3 credits).  SOC 100 .
    9.  Electives, chosen with the advisor, which may include:  BIO 167 , BIO 168 , BIO 405 BIO 406 , BIO 418 , BIO 419 , BIO 425 , BIO 432 , CHM 451 , CHM 453 , PHS 315 
  3. Satisfactory performance on departmental comprehensive educational evaluation.
