Health Navigation Minor/Certificate Program

Health navigation is a new role in the changing health care environment.  Health navigators work in hospitals, health clinics, human service agencies, and insurance companies.  They work with clients to clarify the health system and health insurance, assist clients to access services they need and are eligible for, and educate clients regarding overall health.  The health navigation program is open to UM-Flint students as a minor and to non-degree students as a certificate program.

To be eligible to earn the certificate, community-based applicants (non-degree seeking students) must satisfy the following:

1. A minimum of one year of part-time or full-time volunteer experience within a healthcare setting within the past five years.
2. Effective oral and written skills.
3. Satisfactory completion of a written professional goal statement related to the specialty certificate program.

Prerequisites.  Junior standing, ENG 112  or EHS 120  with a grade of C (2.0) or better.

Requirements.  Seventeen to nineteen credits, including at least 12 completed at UM-Flint, with grades of C+ (2.3) or better in all required courses.

1. Health Navigator Foundations (8 credits).
   HCR 400 ; NSC 393 , PHS 309 /SWR 309 .
2. Completion of one of the following tracks (10-11 credits).
   Health Education

1. PHS 440 ; HCR 380 , MTP 320  or MTP 321 .
2. Practicum.  PHS 409 .

Nursing

1. Current BSN student or currently licensed registered nurse.
2. NUR 110 , NUR 202 , NUR 361 .
3. Practicum.  NSC 409 .

Social Work

1. Major in social work.
2. SWR 440 ; HCR 380  or  NUR 361 , MTP 321  or  NUR 110 .
3. Practicum.  SWR 409 .
