Elementary Education General Program (BS)

Education Department information  

The Elementary Education program, leading to a Bachelor of Science, emphasizes human development and its importance in teaching children in the age span from birth through grade 8, and focuses on constructivist teaching and place-based education.

Two options are available.  Option 1 consists of a major in elementary education and includes a Language Arts Elementary Education Minor  and a  Mathematics Elementary Education Minor .  Option 2 consists of a comprehensive major focused on early childhood education and includes a Specialization in Early Childhood Education  (ZS endorsement).

The 128-credit program if a five-year course of study.  Once accepted, students complete the program in cohorted groups.

Requirements


  1. A minimum of 128 credits, including all School of Education and Human Services General Education requirements  and University of Michigan-Flint graduation requirements .
  2. Grades of C (2.0) or better in all Pre-Education coursework (years 1-2); grades of B- (2.7) or better in all courses in all Elementary Education cohort program coursework (years 3-5).
  3. Passing score on the measure of basic skills required by the Michigan Department of Education and completion of the Pre-Education curriculum required prior to application to the program.
  4. GPAs of B- (2.7) or better in the program, in all minors and/or specializations, and at UM-Flint overall are required for progression through and completion of the program.  (Note the Education Department uses grades in transferred courses in its GPA computations.)
  5. Courses in First aid and in Adult/Child CPR taken from a state-approved vendor:  http://www.michigan.gov/mde/0,4615,7-140-5683_14795-118868–,00.html.
  6. Approved application for Student Teaching Internship.

Pre-Education


Prior to entering the program, students must complete the following courses, typically in the first two years.  A minimum grade of C (2.0) is required in each course.
