Substance Use Treatment and Intervention Program (BS)

The Substance Use Treatment and Intervention (SUTI) program, leading to Bachelor of Science degree, is designed to meet the needs of students who intend to prepare for professional substance use treatment at the bachelor level and those who seek eligibility for the Certified Alchol and Drug Counseling certificate. The four year 124 credit program includes 20 credits in elective courses, 40 credits of General Education requirements and 64 credits of substance use and complementary courses which are individually selected in consultation with a SUTI academic advisor.

Program Vision

The vision of the University of Michgan-Flint Substance Use Treatment and Intervention (SUTI) program is to prepare students for professional substance use treatment at a bachelor degree level. The focus of the curriculum is on the fundamental concepts, current treatment models, and field techniques in substance use treatment. The curriculum is built to complement the state of Michigan’s Twelve Core Functions of substance use treatment and to ensure cultural inclusivity.

Program Goals

1.  Engage students in critical discussions that advance critical thinking about current trends in substance use which affect well-being and relationships within communities.
2.  Prepare students to recognize and intervene in an individual, group or community setting to support people in recovery.
3.  Encourage students to become engaged in their community to facilitate change in substance use prevention, intervention and treatment.
4.  Promote interventions that support consumer safety and a reduction in harm.
5.  Develop detailed and well-rounded academic writing and record keeping, professional level communication skills, and an unwavering committment to ethical practice.

  • Grades of C (2.0) or better in all prerequisites, Substance use and complementary studies courses
  • Overall UM-Flint and SUTI GPAs of 2.4 or higher
  • All UM-Flint graduation requirements, including the School of Education and Human Services General Education requirements

Admission and Progression in the Program

  • Students must declare substance use treatment  and intervention (SUTI) as a major to be admitted into the Bachelor of Science in SUTI program and be assigned a SUTI academic advisor upon completition of 54 credits. Advising before completition of 54 credits occurs in the Student Sucess Center.
  • Student violation of the MCBAP Code of Ethics is basis for dismissal from the program.
  • Grades of C (2.0) or better in all prerequisites, SAT and complementary studies courses and overall UM-Flint and SAT GPAs of 2.4 or higher must be maintained to progress towards the SUTI degree.
