The online Certificate in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Fundamentals provides students with core skills required for this high-demand field, allowing students to prepare for entry level GIS employment opportunities or to refresh existing GIS skill sets.  Students learn the theory and methodology of spatial data collection, storage and management, interpretation and visualization through courses in remote sensing, GIS theory and applications, and geospatial visualization techniques, and train to apply geospatial techniques to address real-world problems.

The certificate program consists of core courses from the GIS Certificate.  Interested students may complete the full certificate instead with the completion of an additional core course and an elective.

The certificate may be earned in conjunction with a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree, or as a stand-alone credential. (Students pursuing a stand-alone credential are not eligible for federal financial aid and may not participate in Commencement.) After the student applies for graduation, the certificate is posted to the student’s official transcript and an official diploma stating the area of the certificate is issued.

Additional Requirements

A minimum of 10 credits in the program must be completed at UM-Flint.

Coursework older than 3 years must be reviewed by the GIS faculty for content alignment with current certificate requirements.
