School of Nursing (SON) information
The University of Michigan-Flint School of Nursing Accelerated Second Degree BSN Program provides an opportunity for students with previous bachelor’s degrees from regionally accredited institutions, as well as veterans of the United States military services with honorable or general discharges, active duty service members, and members of the National Guard or Reserves, to complete the requirements for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing in an accelerated format. Students must be committed to an intense, concentrated program of study, which consists of four full-time semesters of nursing courses completed over 16 months. Eight of the core courses include a clinical component that requires a significant time commitment within a regional hospital or other healthcare facility. Four of the core courses include a focus on competency-based education involving coursework in both the classroom and in the School of Nursing Center for Simulation and Clinical Innovation.
Graduates of the program are eligible to apply to take the NCLEX-RN examination for licensure as a Registered Nurse.
Admission Information
Admission to the program is selective. Students are admitted once annually in the Fall semesters, pending available seats. Admission is rolling; however, applications received by the posted priority deadlines will be given first consideration. The application process and priority deadlines are available on the School of Nursing website. Completion of an on-campus writing sample and an interview are required components of the application process.
Only complete applications are considered. A student who is not admitted and wants to be included in the next pool of applicants must resubmit an updated application.

Students may apply after successful completion of four prerequisite courses, including a biology course and an additional science prerequisite course.

The pre-nursing curriculum must be successfully completed prior to beginning Semester 1 of the program. Admission will be rescinded for students who do not successfully complete all prerequisite courses.
A student who has earned a bachelor’s degree from an international institution and wishes to complete a second bachelors in Nursing at the University of Michigan-Flint will need to have their transcript evaluated by one of the following agencies and needs to have an indication that the degree completed is a “regionally accredited “equivalent.
Admission decisions are made by the Undergraduate Nursing Admissions Committee and are final; there is no appeal process.
English proficiency is required if English is not the native language, regardless of citizenship or permanent resident status and length of time in the United States. English proficiency must be demonstrated by providing evidence through one of the following methods:
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) internet-based test with a minimum total score of 80 and scores of at least 20 in each of the subtopics
- TOEFL Essentials with a minimum Overall Band Score of 9 and scores of at least 8 in each of the subtopics. (TOEFL Essentials MyBest Scores not accepted)
- International English Languages Testing System (IELTS) with a minimum 6.5 overall score and 6.5 in each subtopics
- Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) with a minimum overall score of 80
- Examination for the Certificate in Proficiency in English (ECPE) Certificate of Proficiency
Progression in the Program
Students must achieve minimum course passing standards in all prerequisite and nursing core curriculum courses.
Students admitted to the University of Michigan-Flint School of Nursing Accelerated Second Degree BSN Program are charged according to a tuition and fee schedule specific to BSN students. This fee structure is used for all courses elected while in the program. Students will need additional funds for uniforms, annual medical testing, drug testing, medical equipment, background checks, health forms, a pre-entrance physical examination, immunizations, BLS certification, health insurance, and textbooks. Requirements vary by clinical agency and are at the student’s expense. Additional requirements may include a valid driver’s license, car insurance, and fingerprinting. Students need to provide their own transportation to and from clinical agencies. Students must meet health and background check requirements as well as any other agency-specific requirements. Students who are missing any requirements by the announced deadlines will be administratively dropped. Readmission for the next semester is dependent on available space. Admitted and prospective students are encouraged to refer to the Undergraduate Nursing Student Handbook, which can be found on the School of Nursing website http://www.umflint.edu/nursing for detailed program progression requirements.
Nursing clinical placements are made by the program director, in consultation with course faculty. Clinical shifts and locations may change pending the availability of clinical faculty and agency stipulations. Nursing administration reserves the right to modify a student’s clinical section placement (location, shift, and/or faculty) based on the recommendation of the lead or clinical nursing faculty from previous semesters. In the case of nursing core coursework offered in both the Traditional BSN Program and the Accelerated 2nd Degree BSN Program, specific section assignments may be required during the registration process for the following courses: NUR 202 , NUR 308 , NUR 319 , NUR 331 , NUR 336 , NUR 346 , NUR 410 , NUR 419 , NUR 430 and NUR 435 . Space is not guaranteed for students outside of standard program progression.
The curriculum is designed for full-time students to complete in 16 months after acceptance into the Accelerated Second Degree BSN Program.
Interruption of Program/Progression
A student must complete all required courses in sequence at each level in nursing before progressing to the next level. Progression in the program is pending space available. Students with no nursing course failures and in standard progression will be given priority placement in nursing clinical courses. Students are expected to continue in the program in which they are enrolled in a continuous sequence until graduation. Students who experience an illness or extraordinary life circumstance may request a leave of absence.
