Graduate Certificate in Long Term Care Administration

This 100% online certificate requires students to complete a minimum of nine credits of coursework. The goal of this certificate is to provide students with knowledge of the older adult and the agencies that provide services for this expanding population. Students will 1) understand the nature, depth, and growth of the older adult population, and 2) address the impact of that growth on health and health care. This certificate provides a broad orientation to the field of aging while preparing individuals for the Michigan Nursing Home Licensure Exam and is intended to complement and enhance career opportunities for students across a variety of fields. Professionals with formal training in gerontology may work in a broad range of settings. Examples include: local, state, federal and private agencies providing services to older adults, hospitals, clinics, long-term care facilities, health promotion programs, recreational and leisure activity programs.

The certificate may be earned in conjunction with a degree program or as a stand-alone credential. (Students pursuing a stand-alone credential are not eligible for federal financial aid and may not participate in Commencement.) After the student applies for graduation, the certificate is posted to the student’s official transcript and an official diploma stating the area of the certificate is issued.

Students in the final semester of a UM-Flint healthcare baccalaureate program may receive an override to begin the graduate certificate while completing the baccalaureate degree.

Nine credits, with a minimum grade of B (3.0) in each course:

AGE 578 - Organization and Administration of Long-Term Care (3)
AGE 580 - Regulations & Policies in Long-Term Care Operations (3)
One from:
AGE 550 - Health and Aging (3)
AGE 552 - Chronic Illness and Aging (3)

Additional Requirements

A minimum of 9 credits in the program must be completed at UM-Flint.
Students who received credit for undergraduate courses with graduate course equivalents cannot receive graduate credit for those courses.
Coursework more than 3 years old must be reviewed by the Public Health & Health Sciences Department for content alignment with current certificate requirements.
Certificate credits may be applied toward at most 1/6 the total credits of a relevant master’s program.
