The Mechanical Engineering MSE program provides students a strong background in principles of mechanical engineering and a thorough knowledge of the latest technologies in the field extending beyond the undergraduate experience. The program is designed to meet the unique needs of working professionals.
Admission Information
The Graduate Programs Office serves as the primary source of information for all prospective graduate students, providing detailed guidance and resources to facilitate the application process. Up-to-date and comprehensive details regarding admissions procedures, requirements and deadlines can be found on the program page on the Graduate Programs website.
Students with Non-Mechanical Engineering Bachelor’s Degrees may need to demonstrate proficiency with foundational Mechanical Engineering concepts such as Statics, Materials, Machine Element Design, Fluid Mechanics, Heat Transfer, and Thermodynamics to qualify for admission to the Mechanical Engineering MSE program. Upon evaluation of applicant’s academic history, the Graduate Program Director may require one of two paths to qualify for admission to UM-Flint graduate programs in CIT:
Non-Credit Certificates
CIT offers the non-credit certificates covering foundational Mechanical Engineering concepts. Students must pass the certificate courses and provide proof of successful completion to the Graduate Programs office. The guided self-study certificate is not for academic credit and takes less than a typical semester to complete.
Fast Track
For students seeking a more traditional instruction, CIT also offers an accelerated “Fast Track” program consisting of up to seven undergraduate courses:
EGR 230 - Statics (4)
EGR 260 - Mechanics of Deformable Solids (4)
EGR 280 - Science of Engineering Materials (4)
EGR 315 - Machine Element Design (4)
EGR 350 - Fluid Mechanics (4)
EGR 353 - Thermodynamics (4)
EGR 370 - Dynamics (4)
The Fast Track program assists students from any background to prepare themselves for success in CIT graduate programs. Admission to the program may require the completion of two or more courses from the Fast Track to supplement academic preparation. Students must earn a grade of C (2.0) or better in each Fast Track course and must maintain a B (3.0) or better cumulative grade point average in all Fast Track courses.
Transfer of Credit
With approval of the Mechanical Engineering Graduate Director/Admission Committee, students may transfer in, or elect as graduate non-candidates for degree (NCFD), up to eight credits of graduate-level courses in engineering. Any exceptions should be reviewed by the program committee for exceptional cases such as the students transferring with new faculty to CIT at UM-Flint; however, the transferred credits cannot exceed 50% of the minimum credits to get the degree. See Transfer of Credit in the Graduate Study section for more information.
Academic Rules and Regulations
See the College of Innovation and Technology (CIT) , College of Innovation and Technology Graduate Programs and Graduate Study sections for rules and regulations pertaining to all Innovation and Technology graduate programs.
