Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Program Listings

The Master of Science in Health Services Administration consists of a series of “stackable” graduate certificates, chosen under the direction of faculty advisors and taken individually or in tandem, to tailor or individualize a course of study that meets the individual student’s educational and professional needs.  The certificate programs are offered by the College of Health Sciences in collaboration with other schools/colleges.

Students may apply to the MS in Health Services Administration degree program before having completed any graduate certificate(s); students who have completed or are currently working on UM-Flint graduate certificates may apply and request that those credits be applied toward the MS in Health Services Administration degree.

Admission Information

The Graduate Programs Office serves as the primary source of information for all prospective graduate students, providing detailed guidance and resources to facilitate the application process.  Up-to-date and comprehensive details regarding admissions procedures, requirements and deadlines can be found on the program page on the Graduate Programs website.

Time Limit for Degree Completion

Graduate certificates applied to the MS in Health Services Administration degree must be completed within five years.  Students whose completed certificates exceed this five-year time limit must petition the academic standards committee in order to have those certificates count toward degree requirements.

Academic Rules and Regulations

See the College of Health Sciences (CHS)  and Graduate Study sections for rules and regulations pertaining to all College of Health Sciences graduate programs.

Requirements (30 credits)

At least 30 credits with a minimum overall GPA of 3.0, to include:

Graduate Certificates

A combination of two to three certificates in which the total number of credits is at least 24. Students must still fulfill the minimum 30 credit requirement.

Optional Capstone Project or Experience (0-3 credits)

A culminating project or experience that synthesizes concepts from the separate certificates, approved by the advisor. In consultation with the faculty advisor and other faculty members, students will determine the appropriate culminating experience for their needs. When appropriate, faculty from other units may serve as project mentors and collaborators for this experience.

Additional Requirements

  • Up to six (6) graduate credits from an accredited university may be transferred and applied to the Health Services Administration program, subject to the aproval of the program faculty. See Transfer of Credit in the Graduate Study  section for additional information on University of Michigan-Flint policies regarding the transfer of graduate credit.

  • Courses required for more than one certificate count for credit toward the degree only once.

  • Coursework older than 3 years must be reviewed by the Public Health and Health Sciences Department for content alignment with current certificate requirements, and certificates earned more than 5 years in the past may not be applied to the degree; any exception must be reviewed and determined by the departmental/programmatic home of the degree.

  • Students who received credit for undergraduate courses with graduate course equivalents cannot receive graduate credit for those courses. In this case, students will work with their faculty advisors to select appropriate courses from the list of approved electives/substitutions provided by the faculty delivering instruction.
  • A grade of B- in an individual elective course is permitted to reach the 30 credits; however, a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 is required for the graduate certificates and degree.
