SWR 535 - Social Work Practice in Schools

Introduction to school social work practice, including theoretical foundations of the school social work profession and service delivery, education policy, educational justice and ethics, and the intersection between social work and education. Provides a foundational understanding of the role of social workers in schools, with a focus on how schools function and how current education policies and practices impact students. Emphasis on historically marginalized and vulnerable students by examining school disciplinary methods, opportunity gaps, justice in schools, and the social worker’s role of advocacy. Students engage in self-reflection and explore concepts of privilege, power and oppression in the school system, critical school social work, and social workers’ positionality in the education system.
