SWR 644 - Assessment and Diagnosis with Children and Adolescents in Schools

Examination of various assessments conducted with children and youth in the school setting, including assessments of social development, functional behavior, adaptive behavior and special education eligibility, and their use in eliminating barriers to learning and enabling equitable access to education. Topics include the impact of trauma on development, learning and school performance, environmental context, depression and suicidality, externalizing behaviors, issues related to health and sexuality, bullying, violence prevention and intervention, and substance use. Emphasis on the use of multidimensional culturally responsive and strengths-based assessment to identify student strengths and resiliency factors, academic and learning challenges, and special education needs.  Students learn how to use standardized assessment protocols and conduct interviews and direct observations, and to utilize assessments to engage with students, families and school staff in creating effective interventions.
