Overview

To become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), a licensed registered nurse must successfully complete an accredited entry-level nurse anesthesia program and pass the National Certification Examination (NCE) given by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists.

In partnership with Hurley Medical Center, the UM-Flint Anesthesia Program provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to administer high quality anesthetic care and be well prepared to enter expanding leadership and specialty roles within the complex field of healthcare. Graduates exceed minimum standards set by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs.

The Anesthesia Program is fully accredited through the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, 222 S. Prospect Avenue, Park Ridge, IL 60068, ph. 847-655-1160. Graduate Degrees

For the practicing registered nurse with a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate biological science:

Anesthesia Entry-Level Program (DNAP) : The entry-level DNAP degree program is for the licensed registered nurse who wants to become a CRNA and pursue a career in nurse anesthesia. Students acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for successful entry into independent nurse anesthesia practice under close clinical and didactic supervision. The three-year curriculum combines intensive didactic coursework with concurrent clinical experiences at Hurley Medical Center and other affiliate clinical sites in the greater mid-Michigan area. The program’s faculty and staff are highly dedicated to graduates’ achievement of full professional competency.

For the practicing CRNA with a master’s degree:

The Anesthesia Completion Program (DNAP) is a post-professional degree program requiring minimal or no campus visits so students can retain full-time employment in a clinical setting. The Anesthesia Practice/Business Administration (Dual DNAP/MBA) allows certain courses to count towards both degrees for faster degree completion. Graduates earn two separate diplomas and receive two degree citations on their transcript. The Completion DNAP degree program and the Dual Degree Completion DNAP/MBA program are no longer accepting new students.
