Nursing Graduate Programs

The University of Michigan-Flint (UM-Flint), School of Nursing is widely recognized and respected for the quality of its graduates, the Doctor in Nursing Practice, Master of Science in Nursing, and the Post-Graduate Certificate programs prepares students to become highly-skilled nurses equipped to provide exceptional health care, and to be a leader capable of navigating today’s complex healthcare environment.

The graduate program faculty promote the mission and vision of the University of Michigan-Flint and the School of Nursing by supporting further development of the knowledge and skills to find, critically appraise, and use the best evidence in teaching, scholarship, practice, and service within the context of understanding human and cultural diversity. The mission is carried out in part by faculty maintaining clinical expertise, academic excellence, and sensitivity to our partners in the diverse communities we serve.

The curriculum supports the further development of critical thinking, humanistic and scientific inquiry, and understanding human and cultural diversity. There is a focus on health problems and issues in local, state, national, and international areas. The design of the program provides for asynchronous and synchronous online learning and individual attention to students through electronic, phone, and face-to-face communication and the use of local clinical preceptors. The graduate program strengthens university collaboration with many health care institutions and providers in local, regional, national, and international areas. We strongly encourage our undergraduate students to participate, when possible, in clinical research projects in the graduate program as well as to apply for graduate study.

Graduate Nursing Programs

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree is the foundation for graduate study in nursing. The UM-Flint full-time and part-time Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Program prepares nurses to be Family Nurse Practitioners. We also offer a Master of Science in Nursing Program which prepares nurses as a Nurse Educator.

The UM-Flint full-time and part-time Doctor of Nursing Practice (DPN) Program prepares nurses to be Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioners, Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioners, Family Nurse Practitioners, and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners. A Nursing Practice / Business Administration (DNP/MBA) dual degree program is also offered.

The Post-Graduate Certificates in Nursing are also available for licensed nurse practitioners seeking certification as an Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Certificate . A Post-Graduate Certificate is also available for master’s prepared nurses seeking certificate as a Nurse Educator .
