Anthropology is the study of human culture in past and contemporary societies. It is a holistic study of humanity that attempts to understand and explore questions of human diversity. At UM-Flint we value perspectives from physical anthropology and archaeology, and focus on cultural and linguistic anthropology. Our approach emphasizes the significance of the symbolic and material worlds that humans live in, create, and contest, and how this world building interacts with questions of inequality, gender and kinship, political organization, economic systems, religion, ethics, and other topics. We work with students to develop skills valuable in the workplace-such as research methods, critical observation, cultural competencies, and the ability to communicate complex ideas-as well as prepare those who are interested for graduate school, and all for the leading of a full and fulfilling life.
