The University of Michigan-Flint offers two graduate degrees through the School of Management: the Master of Business Administration (MBA)  and the Master of Science in Accounting (MSA) . The MBA program is offered in two delivery modes: the Traditional program  (evening classroom sessions) and the mixed-mode NetPlus! program (online and weekend classroom sessions). The required courses in the MSA program are offered in the mixed-mode delivery format, with elective courses delivered entirely in-class or entirely online. The School of Management also offers a program that leads to Graduate Certificate in Business , which can be completed in both delivery modes.

School of Management business programs are accredited by AACSB International – The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (http://www.aacsb.edu).

Mission of the School

As part of the internationally recognized University of Michigan system, our mission is to provide high-quality management education to prepare our students for intellectual growth, productive careers, and professional development. We are committed to excellence in teaching, learning, intellectual contributions and creative endeavors.

We use our professional skills to provide service to the university, professional organizations, alumni, and the community as we engage them to enrich our intellectual pursuits and instructional activities.

We deliver our programs to a diverse group of graduate and undergraduate students primarily in Michigan and the surrounding region using a variety of learning/teaching approaches that focus on skills, abilities, technology and knowledge vital to organizations. We will also expand these programs to reach out to the national and international community in order to link our students and faculty to the global marketplace.

Admission to the MBA Program

Admission to the MBA program is open to qualified graduates of accredited colleges and universities of the United States and elsewhere, whether the bachelor’s degree is in the arts, sciences, engineering or business administration. Applicants should have a strong quantitative aptitude and at least one year of formal college preparation in mathematics including a course in either finite mathematics or calculus.

Applications for admission are available from the School of Management Office, the MBA website, http://mba.umflint.edu, or from the Office of Graduate Programs. Admission to the program is not granted until the following materials are submitted and reviewed:

  1. Completed application for graduate admission.
  2. Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended.
  3. A professional resume including work experience and extracurricular activities.
  4. Three letters of recommendation (professional and/or academic).
  5. Scores from the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or Graduate Record Examination (GRE). 
  6. Statement of Purpose.

In addition, international students are required to submit the following:

  1. Official documents demonstrating English proficiency.
  2. Notarized Affidavit of Financial Support.
  3. Bank statement.

In evaluating applications, consideration is given to these indicators of aptitude and preparedness for graduate study in management. The School of Management weighs these materials in making admission decisions, in conjunction with relevant business and managerial experience. Admission decisions are guided by a desire to draw participants from diverse organizations and backgrounds, balancing class composition to ensure wide ranging experiences and perspectives.

Priority application deadlines are August 1 for fall entry, November 1 for winter entry, February 1 for spring entry (Netplus! only),  and May 1 for summer entry (NetPlus! only). International applications are due May 1 for fall entry, and September 1 for winter entry. Completed files received by the deadline receive priority in review; files completed after the deadline are reviewed if seats remain.

Admission to the MSA Program

The MSA program is designed for students who have demonstrated the ability to succeed in graduate-level professional education and in completing the CPA exam. Students can complete the undergraduate preparation necessary for the MSA program either through a bachelor’s program that focuses on accounting or through the other bachelor programs at accredited colleges and universities of the United States and elsewhere. The program’s foundation courses are intended for students with less undergraduate accounting preparation.

Students pursuing a MSA degree are admitted to the program using the same criteria as those currently existing for the MBA program. Applications for admission are available from the School of Management Office, the MSA website, http://msa.umflint.edu, or from the Office of Graduate Programs. Admission to the program is not granted until the application materials are submitted and reviewed.

Admission to Graduate Certificate in Business Program

The Graduate Certificate in Business program is designed for participants with degrees other than business who are interested in learning some of the basic concepts of business or are considering the eventual completion of an MBA. Students with a bachelor degree in business are encouraged to pursue the MBA program.

Students pursuing this certificate are admitted to the program using the same criteria as those currently existing for the MBA program with the exception of GMAT or GRE scores. Applicants should have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better in their bachelor’s degree. The applicants must also have completed a college level mathematics, statistics, or quantitative course to be eligible for the program. Applications for admission are available from the School of Management Office, the MBA website, http://mba.umflint.edu, or from the Office of Graduate Programs. Admission to the program is not granted until the application materials are submitted and reviewed.

The MBA Program Provides

  1. Convenient accessible delivery in two modes: (1) Traditional MBA evening classes and (2) NetPlus! MBA mixed-mode classes (combination of online learning and weekend residencies). Visit http://mba.umflint.edu for detailed information on both modes.
  2. Understanding of the fundamental disciplines and skills essential to decision making: behavioral science, economics, communication, and quantitative methods.
  3. Knowledge of the functional areas of business: accounting, finance, organizational behavior, marketing, and operations management.
  4. Understanding of the environment external to business and the integration of activities within the firm and of the firm within society.
  5. If desired, in-depth competency in specialized areas of business through concentration areas: Accounting, Computer Information Systems, Finance, Health Care Management, International Business, Lean Manufacturing, Marketing, and Organizational Leadership.

Modes of Delivery

  1. The Traditional MBA mode of delivery includes on campus classes held in the evening once a week per course. Students typically enroll in two courses in the fall and winter terms, and one course in the spring or summer term. International students in the Traditional MBA program are required to be full-time students and take at least 6 credit hours of course work in the fall and winter terms. Traditional MBA students who wish to get a concentration may be required to take the concentration courses in the Netplus! MBA mode of delivery. Normal completion time is 20-32 months.
  2. The NetPlus! MBA mode of delivery blends the personal interaction of traditional classroom activities with the anytime, anywhere convenience of modern online learning. Weekend campus sessions are held twice a semester on Fridays and Saturdays and enhance the quality of the learning experience. Students typically enroll in two courses in the fall, winter, spring and summer terms (12-week terms). Normal completion time is 15-24 months.

The MSA Program Provides

  1. A focused, comprehensive accounting master’s degree that provides excellent preparation for the Certified Public Accounting (CPA) Exam.
  2. A foundation in accounting principles for students with undergraduate degrees in fields other than accounting.
  3. In-depth study in financial reporting, cost management, accounting systems and controls, auditing, and forensic accounting.
  4. Elective courses in taxation, non-for-profit accounting, advanced financial reporting, and financial statement analysis.
  5. Convenient NetPlus! offerings of foundation and required courses that combine online learning with Friday/Saturday on campus residencies every six weeks. Elective courses are offered online or on campus during evening timeslots.

MSMO/MBA Dual Degree Program

The MSMO/MBA dual degree program offered through Kettering University and the University of Michigan-Flint provides a broad foundation of business knowledge and specialized expertise of lean production systems. Students in the dual degree program take fewer courses (12 semester credit hours) than if they had completed both programs separately.

The programs are offered jointly and are completed in sequence (one degree following the other). Graduates earn two master’s degrees, a Master of Science in Manufacturing Operations (MSMO) from Kettering University, and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) with a Lean Manufacturing Concentration from the University of Michigan-Flint.
