Music Performance Program (BM)


Requirements.

  1. Performance (33-35 credits).
    1. Applied music (20 credits).
      MUS 151 , MUS 152 , MUS 251 , MUS 252 , MUS 351 , MUS 451 ; MUS 352 , MUS 356  (taken concurrently); MUS 452 , MUS 456  (taken concurrently).
    2. Major performance ensemble (8 credits).
      MUS 201 /MUS 401  or MUS 210 /MUS 410  , based on Applied Music section. 
    3. Conducting (4 credits).
      MUS 371 , MUS 372 .
    4. Chamber music (1 credit).
      MUS 302  (required of instrumentalists only, vocalists may elect).
    5. Opera (1 credit).
      MUS 230 /MUS 430  (required of vocalists only, instrumentalists may elect).
    6. Keyboard skills (0-2 credits).
      MUS 130  with a grade of B (3.0) or better, or equivalent proficiency as demonstrated by examination.  
  2. Music theory (18 credits).
    MUS 141 , MUS 142 , MUS 143 , MUS 144 , MUS 241 , MUS 242 , MUS 243 .
  3. Music history (9 credits). 
    MUS 261 , MUS 262 , MUS 361 .
  4. Pedagogy, literature, and diction (6-8 credits).
    Voice majors. MUS 232 MUS 368 MUS 366 .
    Instrumental majors. MUS 392  concurrent with one from MUS 117 MUS 121 , MUS 124 , MUS 125 , MUS 127 , MUS 128 , MUS 129 , matching the student’s applied music section (2 cr.)MUS 392  in solo literature (2 cr.);
    MUS 392  in orchestal literature (2 cr.).                                                       
  5. Other  music courses (12 credits). 
    MUS 170 , MUS 226 , and six credits of MUS electives, excluding MUS 100 , MUS 136 , MUS 137.
  6. Completion of ARB 112 CHN 112 FRN 112 , GER 112 JPN 112 LAT 105 , RUS 112  or  SPN 112 , or equivalent proficiency by examination (0-8 credits). Students who wish to meet this requirement with courses taken in high school or at other institutions, or those who have attained fluency in a foreign language without formal course work, must demonstrate such equivalent proficiency by examination.
  7. All General Education requirements  of the College of Arts and Sciences.
