Communication Studies Department information

The General Program in Communication offers students liberal arts coursework as a supporting program for careers in communication, including but not limited to communication training and development, media, law and public relations, as well as graduate study.

Requirements

No more than 40 credits in Communication may be counted towards the BA degree.

Speech Communication

COM 281 - Principles of Interpersonal Communication (3).
COM 320 - History and Theory of Persuasion (3)
COM 321 - Speech Criticism (3)
COM 381 - Intercultural Communication (3)

Professional Communication

Two of the following subgroups:

Organizational Communication

Advertising

COM 226 - Advertising (3).
COM 316 - Advanced Advertising (3).

Public Relations

COM 361 - Public Relations (3).
COM 371 - Advanced Public Relations (3).

C. Electives (9 credits)

At least 9 additional credits in COM courses.

D. Cognate

To increase the student’s ability to understand and apply Communication and to see its interdisciplinary nature, a block of courses outside the Communication program, fulfilled in any of the following ways:

Four courses (12 credits), chosen with the approval of the student’s advisor, in one or more disciplines.
A minor.
A second major.

E. Additional Requirements

All requirements of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Bachelor of Arts degree, including General Education requirements and additional BA distribution requirements.
At least 25 hours of coursework toward the major taken at UM-Flint.
A GPA of at least 2.5 in the major at time of graduation.
