The Elementary Education program, leading to a Bachelor of Science, emphasizes human development and its importance in teaching children in the age span from birth through grade 8, and focuses on constructivist teaching and place-based education.
Grades of C (2.0) or better in all Pre-Education coursework (years 1-2); grades of B- (2.7) or better in all courses in all Elementary Education cohort program coursework (years 3-5).
Passing score on the measure of basic skills required by the Michigan Department of Education and completion of the Pre-Education curriculum required prior to application to the program.
GPAs of B- (2.7) or better in the program, in all minors and/or specializations, and at UM-Flint overall are required for progression through and completion of the program. (Note the Education Department uses grades in transferred courses in its GPA computations.)
Prior to entering the program, students must complete the following courses, typically in the first two years. A minimum grade of C (2.0) is required in each course.
