Foreign Languages and Literatures Department

Prospective majors who enter with a substantial part of their introductory language completed in high school and those who intend to do graduate work in French are strongly advised to begin a second language as early as possible in their college programs.

Students in this program are strongly encouraged to study in a French-speaking country. See faculty advisors for recommendations of foreign study programs.

Prerequisite

One of:

FRN 212 - Intermediate French II (4)
Equivalent proficiency as demonstrated by examination

Requirements

A. French (28 credits)

Twenty-eight credits in French beyond the level of FRN 212, to include:

FRN 291 - Laboratory of French Phonology (1).
FRN 301 - Conversation and Composition I (3)
FRN 303 - Conversation and Composition II (3)
FRN 309 - Advanced French Composition and Grammar (3)
FRN 310 - Understanding the French-Speaking World (3)
FRN 311 - Survey of French Literature: Middle Ages to 1800 (3)
FRN 314 - Survey of French Literature: 1800 to Present (3)
At least nine additional credits in French language and/or literature with a maximum of 3 credits from FFS courses.

B. Cognates

History and Culture

A western civilization or equivalent history course approved by the advisor
A course in French history

English or Comparative Literature

A course in English or comparative literature approved by the advisor.

C. Additional Requirements

All requirements of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Bachelor of Arts degree, including General Education requirements and additional BA distribution requirements

Minimum Credits for the Degree: 120 credits
