Nursing UG Certificate in Leadership and Management

School of Nursing (SON)

The University of Michigan-Flint School of Nursing Undergraduate Certificate in Nursing Leadership and Management is designed for the student completing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree through either the RN to BSN, Traditional BSN, or Accelerated Second Degree BSN program. The certificate will prepare students for positions of leadership in their organizations.  Upon completion of the program, the student will be prepared to take the national certification exam for Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML) administered by the American Organization of Nurse Executives and/or the Nurse Executive Board Certification examination administered by the American Nurse Credentialing Center (NCC).

Admission

Prospective students must file an application to the University of Michigan-Flint through the University’s Office of Undergraduate admissions. (http://www.umflint.edu/admissions) and be admitted to either the RN to BSN, Traditional BSN, or Accelerated Second Degree BSN program.  Official copies of transcripts must be sent to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.  RN to BSN program students must also provide proof of Registered Nurses (RN) licensure in the United States which must be validated in order to progress into select nursing courses and complete all degree requirements. The University of Michigan-Flint has a revolving admission policy, which allows prospective students to be admitted in Fall, Winter, Spring or Summer.  Before applying, out-of-state students or those who may relocate during the program, should contact the School of Nursing to confirm that the University of Michigan-Flint is authorized to offer distance education in the student’s state of residence.  The School of Nursing, in conjunction with the Office of Extended Learning, will determine the University’s status in that state.

The Undergraduate Certificate in Nursing Leadership and Management requires a minimum of 14 credits.  University of Michigan-Flint students in a bachelor’s degree program are required to complete at least 45 UM-Flint credits; the last 30 credits must be completed at UM-Flint.  BSN degree-seeking students must complete a minimum of 120 credits which may include both transfer credits and UM-Flint credits.  Students earning a Second Bachelor’s Degree or a Simultaneous Bachelor’s Degree should review the University Catalog (http://catalog.umflint.edu).  In addition to the minimum 120 overall credit minimum, 45 UM-Flint credits, and the last 30-credit hour and University bachelor’s degree requirements, student must also satisfy all requirements for the degree they are pursuing.

Progression in the Program

Students must earn grades of C+ (2.3) or better in all coursework to fulfill the certificate requirement.

BSN students will need additional funds for uniforms, annual tuberculosis testing, drug testing, medical equipment, background checks, health forms, pre-entrance physical examination, immunizations, CRP certification, health insurance and textbooks.  Requirements vary by clinical agency and are at the student’s expense.  Additional requirements may include a valid driver’s license, car insurance, and fingerprinting.  Students need to provide their own transportation to and from clinical agencies.  Students must meet health requirements and background check requirements as well as any other agency-specified requirements. Students who are missing any requirements by the announced deadlines will be administratively dropped.  Readmission for the next semester is dependent on available space.

Requirements (14 credits)


A. Admission


Admission to the University of Michigan-Flint BSN program, RN to BSN or Traditional BSN, or Accelerated Second Degree BSN program.

C. Program Assessment


Students are required to participate in periodic program assessment, which enables the School of Nursing to test the efficacy of the curriculum.

D. Additional Requirements


Students are required to successfully complete the BSN program and all certificate requirements in order to be granted the certificate upon graduation from the University of Michigan-Flint.
