Health Sciences (BS/MPH)

The Health Sciences BS/MPH Program is for designed for undergraduate Health Sciences students with an interest in pursuing an MPH degree. The curriculum allows students to earn BS and MPH degrees with potentially 17 fewer credits than if completing the degree programs separately.

The degrees are independent; each is awarded when completed, with specified courses accepted for the MPH degree after the BS degree is awarded.

The Bachelor of Science in Health Science is offered in a variety of delivery formats including, face-to-face, in the evenings, mixed-mode, and online, and the MPH program can be completed completely online using traditional online and hyperflex technology. Classes for both programs can be taken as part of a part-time or full-time schedule.

The dual program courses are offered in a variety of delivery formats including face-to-face, in the evenings, mixed-mode and online.

Students in the Health Sciences (BS) program who are interested in the BS/MPH program should apply during the junior year and must have:

●    Statement of Purpose in a typewritten document of 500 words or less that includes:

      o  What is your concentration of interest (health education or health administration) and 
           how would completion of the MPH program allow you to live your purpose?

      o  Describe how your coursework, work/volunteer, and life experiences have prepared 
          you to be successful in the MPH program. In your answer please also include 
          experiences that have helped you better understand, address, and/or advocate for 
          diversity, inclusion, and equity issues.

      o  Describe your experiences with facing and overcoming adversity.

      o  Describe how your characteristics and goals are congruent with the Program’s 
          mission and values (see below)

      o  Describe how your personal or academic background and experiences will bring a 
          unique perspective to the program and positively contribute to the Public Health 
          community.

      o  Any special circumstances applicable to your application

●    60 credits of undergraduate coursework completed

●    A minimum overall GPA of 3.0

●    A minimum GPA of 3.3 in the Health Sciences undergraduate major

●    A grade of B (3.0) or higher in MTH 090 or a higher-level mathematics course

●    Two letters of recommendation from faculty members in Health Sciences

Time Limit for Degree Completion

Coursework for the MPH degree must be completed within six (6) years of the date of first admission to the program.  Students may request or petition for an extension of this time limit. Approval of a time extension will be at the discretion of the program director, program faculty, and the Dean of Graduate Programs.

Requirements


Upon successful completion of the requirements for the BS portion of the program, the student is awarded the BS degree; upon successful completion of the remaining MPH requirements, the student is awarded the MPH degree.

Bachelor of Science (124 credits)


All requirements of the Health Sciences Program (BS) , with the exception that the students elect up to 17 credits at the graduate level to satisfy specified undergraduate requirements.

All MPH courses, including those elected to count toward both the BS and the MPH, must be completed with grades of B- (2.7) or better.

Graduate-level courses that satisfy undergraduate requirements for the dual BS/MPH program are:

Master of Public Health (43-46 credits)


All requirements of the Public Health (MPH) , with a grade of B- (2.7) or better in each course.

Note: PHS 503 will be waived if PHS 210 was completed with a grade of C (2.0) or better within the last five years.


Minimum Credits for Both Degrees: 152 credits

Honors Program


All bachelor-degree-seeking students with GPAs of 3.5 or higher are eligible to apply to the University of Michigan-Flint Honors Program.  Please contact the Honors Program Manager or the Honors Program Director for further information.
