Graduate Certificate in Business

The Graduate Certificate in Business program is intended primarily for individuals with degrees in areas other than business, who are interested in learning some basic concepts of business or are considering the eventual completion of an MBA. (Students with a bachelor’s in business are encouraged to pursue the MBA program.)

The certificate may be earned in conjunction with a degree program or as a stand-alone credential.  (Students pursuing a stand-alone credential are not eligible for federal financial aid and may not participate in Commencement.)  After the student applies for graduation, the certificate is posted to the student’s official transcript and an official diploma stating the area of the certificate is issued.

Admission Information

The Graduate Programs Office serves as the primary source of information for all prospective graduate students, providing detailed guidance and resources to facilitate the application process.  Up-to-date and comprehensive details regarding admissions procedures, requirements and deadlines can be found on the program page on the Graduate Programs website.

Academic Rules and Regulations

See the School of Management (SOM) and Graduate Study sections for rules and regulations pertaining to all School of Management graduate programs.

A minimum grade of B (3.0) is required in each course.

Additional Requirements

  • A minimum of 9 credits in the program must be completed at UM-Flint.
  • Students who received credit for undergraduate courses with graduate course equivalents cannot receive graduate credit for those courses.
  • Coursework more than 3 years old must be reviewed by the Public Health & Health Sciences Department for content alignment with current certificate requirements.
  • Certificate credits may be applied toward at most 1/6 the total credits of a relevant master’s program.

Notes

  • All requirements must be completed within four calendar years of initial enrollment in the program.
  • An overall grade point average of at least 3.0 is required for program completion. A grade point average of less than 3.0 constitutes a sufficient basis for probationary status and, if the grade point average is not improved, dismissal from the program. Students with probationary status must make progress toward “good standing.” Failure to do so may result in required reduction in the maximum courses the student may enroll in or other actions. Courses with a grade of D or less must be retaken. Courses in which a grade below B is received may be retaken once for credit. In such cases, both the original grade and the grade received when the course is retaken appear on the transcript and are used in determining the student’s grade point average.
