English General Program (BA)

The English program provides a comprehensive experience that integrates three disciplines: linguistics, literature, and writing. Through foundational, applied, and advanced coursework and flexible elective pathways, students are prepared to be analytical and innovative professionals who understand the integrated nature of language, culture and text and who contribute to the overall health and well-being of their communities. 

Requirements


Forty-two to forty-three credits as follows, with each course used to satisfy only one requirement in the major:

A. Foundations


A foreign language course from ARB 112 ASL 112 ENG 112 FRN 112 GER 112 SPN 112 ; or successful transfer of the second semester of a foreign language or demonstration of equivalent proficiency by examination

A course in US Diversity (US) or Global Studies (GS)  

E. Career Preparation (3 credits)


F. Senior Seminar (3 credits)


G. Individual Writing Portfolio


Completion of an Individual Writing Portfolio. Contact the Department for portfolio guidelines.

H. Electives (9 credits)


At least 9 additional credits in ENG/LIN/TEL courses. Students may choose to elect courses from within the suggested pathways in Linguistics, Writing and Literature below, or to build a pathway of their own.

Honors Program


All bachelor-degree-seeking students with GPAs of 3.5 or higher are eligible to apply to the University of Michigan-Flint Honors Program .  Please contact the Honors Program Manager or the Honors Program Director for further information.
