Mission and Assessment
The programs in Art and Art History prepare students for innovative roles in curation, design, entrepreneurship and technology, and as fine artists, with a curriculum that emphasizes analytical processes, critical thinking, and theoretical and technical proficiency. Students are trained as innovators, creators, communicators, theorists, socially-engaged artists, creative problem-solvers, design thinkers, and historians of art and visual culture.  A program focus is on academic excellence and integrity in scholarship.

The curriculum provides students with the necessary knowledge and skills to prepare them for career entry and also serve as creatives in related fields, such as art education, design and development, photography, media production, advertising, exhibition management, curatorial work and criticism. In addition, we

  • cultivate a supportive learning community for both students and faculty in which intellectual curiosity and creative exploration of ideas are nurtured
  • encourage student involvement in the university and greater Flint community as artists and historians of art in related fields, engaged citizens, creative thinkers, and scholars

The Fine Art and Design programs offer a wide range of exciting opportunities to assist students in reaching their career, creative, and intellectual goals. Art and Art History faculty members offer students a level of personal attention that enhances the learning process. A high degree of hands-on experience, community engagement, and internship opportunities exist within the programs, which have numerous studio spaces for areas including ceramics, drawing, painting, photography and sculpture. In addition, the programs have state of the art facilities for interaction design, graphic design, digital and traditional (darkroom) photography, and audio/video production.

The Fine Art and Design programs participate in the University-wide effort to assess its academic programs. Information on assessment plans, including goals, methods and outcomes is available at http://www.umflint.edu/assessment.
