A concentration in music introduces students to life in the musical arts.  Students are given the opportunity to study the essential aspects of music as an art form, both as it developed and continues to develop through time and in world cultures. Degree programs in music prepare students for careers as successful educators, performers, arrangers/composers, and leaders in the arts. A dedicated faculty seeks students of high artistic and intellectual promise to pursue musical studies. The pursuit of a career in music requires diligent practice and perseverance under the guidance of accomplished teaching artists. Offered are courses for students who wish to concentrate their studies in music as a profession, and courses for those who wish to study music as part of general education.

Students who are not music majors, but who have experience performing in choral and/or instrumental ensembles, are encouraged to participate in the musical life of the University as members of University Chorale, Wind Symphony, University Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, Chamber Singers, and in chamber music ensembles.  Performance is at the heart of music studies and a full range of performing opportunities for majors and non-majors alike is available.

Admission as a music major or minor, or for Applied Music study, is based on an audition in instrumental or vocal performance. Please visit the department’s web pages, contact one of the professors or administrative support staff named above, or call the number provided above for details.

Music scholarships are available by audition to music majors, music minors, and students participating in performance ensembles. For additional information, interested students should consult the Financial Aid section of this Catalog or contact one of the professors or lecturers mentioned above.

The University of Michigan-Flint is a fully-accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music, 11250 Roger Bacon Drive, Suite 21, Reston, VA 20190, (703) 437-0700.

Mission and Assessment
Music programs serve students from a variety of musical backgrounds who are willing to demonstrate their commitment to performance as musicians, and accept the challenge to achieve excellence.  Extensive music curricula, as well as a rich and diverse calendar of events including concerts, recitals, clinics, and workshops, provide opportunities for performers and audiences and enhance the University’s outreach efforts.

Music faculty participate in the University-wide effort to assess academic programs.  Information on assessment plans, including goals, methods, and outcomes is available at http://www.umflint.edu/assessment.Admission as a music major or minor, or for Applied Music study, is based on an audition in instrumental or vocal performance.
