Biochemistry Program (BS)

The student who expects to accept an entry-level position in any area requiring knowledge of biological chemistry, or to do graduate study in biochemistry, other areas of biomedical science (medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, toxicology, physiology, cell and/or molecular biology, molecular genetics, immunology, microbial physiology, agricultural chemistry/plant science, food science, or human nutrition) may be best served by completing the General Biochemistry Track. The student who intends to continue on to professional study in medicine (human, osteopathic, veterinary), dentistry, or pharmacy (PharmD) may elect to complete either the Program in Biochemistry, Pre-Medical or Pre-Dental track. Completion of all three tracks results in a degree that is American Chemical Society Certified.

Requirements.

  1. CHM 260 , CHM 261 , CHM 262 , CHM 263  or CHM 265 , CHM 310 , CHM 330 , CHM 331 , CHM 332 , CHM 333 , CHM 340 , CHM 341 CHM 344 CHM 366 , CHM 367  (2 cr.), CHM 410 CHM 450 , CHM 451 , CHM 452 , CHM 453 CHM 455  or CHM 458 CHM 472  (44 credits)
  2. BIO 113 , BIO 326 , BIO 328  (12 credits).
  3. MTH 121 , MTH 122  (8 credits).
  4. PHY 143 , PHY 145 or PHY 243 PHY 245  (8-10 credits). 
  5. Completion of one of the following concentrations:

    General Concentration (10 credits)
    1.  CHM 442 , CHM 443 , CHM 460 , CHM 461 , CHM 473 , CHM 499  (1 cr.).  

    Pre-Medical Concentration
    1.  BIO 111 BIO 135  or BIO 405 BIO 406  (8 cr.).
    2.  PSY 100 PSY 315  (6 cr.).
    3.  SOC 100  (3 cr.).
    4.  Electives, chosen with the advisor and based on where admission is sought, which may include: BIO 167 BIO 168 , BIO 301 , BIO 418 , BIO 419 BIO 425 BIO 432 , BIO 433  or BIO 445 , BIO 405 BIO 406 PSY 309 PSY 316 HCR 362 , PHL 168 .

    Pre-Dental Concentration
    1.  BIO 111 , BIO 405 BIO 406  (8 cr.).
    2.  PSY 100  (3 cr.).
    3.  SOC 100  (3 cr.).
    4.  Electives, chosen with the advisor, which may include:  BIO 167 BIO 168 , BIO 418 , BIO 419 BIO 425 , BIO 433  or BIO 445 BUS 110 

    Pre-Pharmacy Concentration
    1.  BIO 111 , BIO 167 BIO 168 , BIO 135  or BIO 405 BIO 406 .
    2.  Electives, chosen with the advisor and based on where admission is sought, which may include:  BIO 301 , BIO 432 , other upper-level anatomy courses, COM 200 COM 210 CSC 121 ECN 201 ECN 202 PHL 202 POL 120 PSY 100 SOC 100 .
      
  6. All requirements of the College of Arts and Sciences Bachelor of Science  degree, including  General Education requirements  and completion of at least 124 credits.
