The Master of Science in Engineering (MSE) Mechanical Engineering program provides students with a strong background in principles of mechanical engineering and a thorough knowledge of the latest technologies in the field which extends beyond the undergraduate experience. The program is designed to meet the unique needs of working professionals.
Admission Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from a regionally accredited college or university. Candidates with degrees other than engineering may be conditionally admitted on a case by case basis and will be required to take prerequisite engineering courses depending on their background.
A minimum overall undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
Completion of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE)
DON’T HAVE A MECHANICAL ENGINEERING DEGREE?
Prospective students from other engineering disciplines may also be considered for admission to the program. A student who has not earned an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering may be required to complete undergraduate mechanical engineering courses before regular admission to the program. Two letters of recommendation. Recommendations should be from individuals familiar with your work in academic or professional contexts and who can comment on your critical thinking skills, your ability to undertake independent projects, and your capacity for collaborating with colleagues. Electronic recommendation requests are sent out as a part of the online application process.
Statement of Purpose: Describe your objectives for graduate study and reasons for selecting this program. Statements may be submitted online during the application process or emailed to FlintGradOffice@umich.edu.

Submit all application materials to the Office of Graduate Programs by 5 p.m. on the day of the application deadline. This program offers rolling admission with monthly application reviews. To be considered for admission, all application materials must be submitted on or before:

Transfer of Credit
With approval of the Engineering Graduate Coordinator, students may transfer in, or elect as graduate non-candidates for degree (NCFD), up to six credits of graduate-level courses in engineering. See Transfer of Credit in the Graduate Study section for more information.
