Data Analytics Program (MS)

Mission and Assessment

Data analytics is a high-demand field with tremendous growth prospects.  This interdisciplinary program will let computer science students apply their learning to careers in industry, and let business, health science and social science students grow their resumes by providing critical 21st-century skills.  Students with data analytics skills can tackle a broad range of real-world problems, from more general functions such as exploratory analysis, communication of findings to decision makers, data cleaning, visualization and using dashboards and spreadsheets, to more technical ones, such as feature extraction, developing prototype models, maintaining data platforms, and implementing algorithms (as well as models) into production.

Admission Information

The Graduate Programs Office serves as the primary source of information for all prospective graduate students, providing detailed guidance and resources to facilitate the application process.  Up-to-date and comprehensive details regarding admissions procedures, requirements and deadlines can be found on the program page on the Graduate Programs website.

Course Delivery

The program offers many opportunities for in-person, online, and distance-learning options.  Core courses can be taken online in multimedia cyber classrooms, and the business, healthcare and social analytics tracks include enough online courses that each can be completed online. Some of the courses in those tracks will also have in-class sections for students who prefer to attend on campus. 

Transfer of Credit

With department approval, students may transfer in, or elect as a graduate non-candidate for degree (NCFD), up to six credits of graduate-level courses in computer science and information systems.  See Transfer of Credit  in the Graduate Study  section for additional information on University of Michigan-Flint policies regarding the transfer of graduate credit.

Time Limit for Degree Completion

All requirements must be completed within six calendar years of initial enrollment in the program.
