Exploration of how visual models, equipartitioning, number lines, comparison and equivalence build foundational understanding of rational numbers. Pedagogical strategies include unpacking mathematical content; performing mathematical explanations; choosing, interpreting and talking with representations; and eliciting, interpreting, supporting and extending others’ thinking.
