Overview

To become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), a licensed registered nurse must successfully complete an accredited entry-level nurse anesthesia program and pass the National Certification Examination (NCE) given by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists.

The UM-Flint Nurse Anesthesia Program provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to administer high quality anesthetic care and be well prepared to enter expanding leadership and specialty roles within the complex field of healthcare. Graduates exceed minimum standards set by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs.

The Anesthesia Program is fully accredited through the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, 222 S. Prospect Avenue, Park Ridge, IL 60068, ph. 847-655-1160. The next accreditation review takes place in 2024. A complete list of accredited anesthesia programs is available from the COA website.

The entry-level Anesthesia Entry-Level Program (DNAP)  program is designed for the licensed registered nurse who wants to become a CRNA and pursue a career in nurse anesthesia. Students acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for successful entry into independent nurse anesthesia practice under close clinical and didactic supervision. The three-year curriculum combines intensive didactic coursework with concurrent clinical experiences at affiliate clinical sites throughout Michigan. The program’s faculty and staff are highly dedicated to graduates’ achievement of full professional competence.
