Theatre Performance Program (BFA)


Theatre and Dance Department information  

The BFA in performance prepares students who are serious, dedicated and gifted for a career in the performing arts. The program is designed to foster the skills and knowledge commensurate with the demands of a life in the theatre. The purpose of the concentration is to develop individual performers equipped to enter the professional arena and to prepare students for further study on the graduate or conservatory level. Admission to the BFA program is by audition after students have completed between 30 and 60 credit hours.

Requirements.

  1. All College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) General Education requirements  and UM-Flint graduation requirements  
  2. Completion of 126 credit hours, including at least 70 in Theatre.
  3. Acting sequence (18 credits).
    THE 230 THE 334 , THE 339  (taken 2 times);  THE 345 , THE 352 THE 230  and THE 339  must be taken in sequence during the freshman and sophomore years; the balance of the sequence may be taken in any order.
  4. Voice and movement sequence (17 credits).
     THE 221 , THE 331 THE 338 , THE 351 THE 333 /DAN 333 ; six credits in dance technique or ensemble selected in consultation with Dance advisor.
  5. Theatre history (9 credits).
     THE 150 THE 300 , THE 301 .
  6. Design/Technical (16 credits).
     THE 214 , THE 215 THE 314  or THE 315 ; ART 251 /THE 251 , ART 271 /THE 271 ;THE 275 /WGS 275 .
  7. Directing (3 credits).
     THE 320 .
  8. Theatre practica (6 credits).
     THE 121  (taken 1-2 times),  THE 122  (taken 1-2 times); THE 123  (taken 1-3 times), THE 124  (taken 1-3 times).
  9. Stage management (3 credits)
    THE 255 .
  10. Capstone (3 credits).
    THE 401  (1 cr.), THE 425  (1 cr.), THE 428  (1 cr.).

In addition, the BFA candidate must audition for and be available to be cast in all main stage productions mounted each year by the Theatre and Dance Department. Each BFA candidate is reviewed by the Theatre faculty in audition/interviews at the end of each semester.

Minimum Credits For the Degree. 126 credits
