Nursing Graduate Programs

The University of Michigan-Flint (UM-Flint), School of Nursing (SON) is widely recognized and respected for the quality of its graduates. The Doctor of Nursing Practice, Master of Science in Nursing, and the Post-Graduate Certificate programs prepares students to become highly-skilled nurses equipped to provide exceptional health care, and to be a leader capable of navigating today’s complex healthcare environment.

The graduate program faculty promote the mission and vision of the University of Michigan-Flint and the School of Nursing by supporting further development of the knowledge and skills to find, critically appraise, and use the best evidence in teaching, scholarship, practice, and service within the context of understanding human and cultural diversity. The mission is carried out in part by faculty maintaining clinical expertise, academic excellence, and sensitivity to our partners in the diverse communities we serve.

The curriculum supports the further development of critical thinking, humanistic and scientific inquiry, and understanding human and cultural diversity. There is a focus on health problems and issues in local, state, national, and international areas. The design of the program provides for asynchronous and synchronous online learning and individual attention to students through electronic, phone, and face-to-face communication and the use of local clinical preceptors. The graduate program strengthens university collaboration with many health care institutions and providers in local, regional, national, and international areas. We strongly encourage our undergraduate students to participate, when possible, in clinical research projects in the graduate program as well as to apply for graduate study.

Graduate Nursing Programs

The School of Nursing offers unique learning experiences and pathways for RNs and BSN-prepared nurses who desire to become a nurse practitioner. Students can apply to the BSN to DNP with MSN program and be eligible for both MSN and DNP degrees. The program allows a student to obtain a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree as a nurse practitioner in one of four specialty concentrations, to sit for the corresponding board certification exam, and to practice as a nurse practitioner while continuing to complete the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree. The MSN to DNP program offers two tracks: Advanced Practice and Executive Leadership. A dual degree program is also offered in a Nursing Practice/Business Administration (DNP/MBA) program. The Post-Graduate Certificate in Nursing is also available for licensed nurse practitioners seeking to certify as an Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Certificate .
