The Africana Studies General (BA) program as well as the Honors program have been placed on moratorium status and are not currently accepting new students. Students who have already declared this major will be allowed to complete their program

Africana Studies (AFA) Information

The Africana Studies program at the University of Michigan-Flint prepares students for the ever-demanding need to engage and function in a diverse society. It is a multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary field of study that provides a well-rounded education in the tradition of the liberal arts and sciences. A degree in Africana Studies will deepen students’ knowledge of Africa and the African Diaspora.

Requirements

Thirty-three credits, as follows:

A. Core Courses (6 credits)

Two from:

B. Electives (24 credits)

At least eight courses from the following groups, as indicated.

Humanities and Fine Arts (9-15 credits)

At least three courses, including at least two at the 300 level or higher, from:

Social Sciences and Education (9-15 credits)

At least three courses, including at least three at the 300 level or higher, from:

C. Capstone/Senior Seminar (3 credits)

AFA 490 - Seminar in Africana Studies (3)

D. Additional Requirements

All requirements of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Bachelor of Arts degree, including General Education requirements and additional BA distribution requirements , and all University of Michigan-Flint graduation requirements . For Africana Studies majors, a foreign language related to the African experience is preferred. The following are particularly recommended: Amharic, Arabic, French, German, Hausa, Oromo, Portuguese, Spanish, Swahili, Yoruba, or other appropriate languages when offered. (This requirement can be met through transfer credits and/or test results from other schools).

Minimum Credits for the Degree: 120 credits

Honors Program Requirements

Prospective Honors Program students are required to complete all the above Africana Studies requirements and University of Michigan-Flint Honors Program requirements, to include:

Honors program students are urged to acquaint themselves as early as possible with the requirements above as well as with the particular procedures for acceptance into the Africana Studies Honors Program. See the departmental honors advisor or the Honors Program Director for this information.
