Mathematics General and Honors Programs (BS)


Mathematics (MTH) information  

This program is designed for the student who wants to study mathematics in some depth as preparation for graduate school or a career in mathematics or a related field.

It is recommended that the general education requirements be completed in the first two years.

Requirements


Completion of at least 124 credits, to include:

B. Concentration of Choice


One of the following concentrations:

Abstract Mathematics


This concentration is recommended for the student who plans to go on to graduate school in mathematics or a related field. The emphasis of the concentration is on abstract, rigorous mathematics and on the development of the student’s analytical and creative talents.

Foreign Language (0-8 credits)

Students who wish to meet this requirement with courses taken in high school or at other colleges and universities, or those who have attained fluency in a foreign language without formal course work, must demonstrate such equivalent proficiency by examination.

Applied Mathematics


This concentration is recommended for students who plan to apply mathematics toward a career in science or industry. Coursework focuses on the use of abstract mathematics to model real-world phenomena arising from a variety of applications.

Mathematics for Data Science


This concentration is recommended for the student who plans to go into a career in data science upon completion of the bachelor degree, or who plans to go on to graduate school in data science or a related field. The emphasis of the concentration is on data analytics with a rigorous statistical background and utilizes diverse algorithms and software.

Mathematics for Social Interaction


This concentration is recommended for students interested in applications of discrete mathematics to contemporary society. Coursework focuses on the mathematical background behind networks, individual and group decision-making, and electronic communication.

C. Additional Requirements


All requirements of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Bachelor of Science  degree, including General Education requirements , and all University of Michigan-Flint graduation requirements.

 

Minimum Credits for the Degree:  124 credits

Honors Program Requirements


Prospective Honors Program students are required to complete all of the above Mathematics requirements and University of Michigan-Flint Honors Program  requirements.

Honors Program students are urged to acquaint themselves as early as possible with the requirements above as well as with the particular procedures for acceptance into the Mathematics Honors Program. See the Mathematics Honors Advisor or the Honors Program Director for this information.
