Elementary Education General and Honors Programs (BS)

The Education Bachelor of Science (BS) program in Education leads to qualification for Michigan teacher certification or to a degree in Education without certification. The program consists of a core set of education courses and at least one concentration that prepares students to teach in a particular grade band, or to complete the degree without certification. Students have the option to complete more than one grade band concentration. 

An Education academic advisor will assist students in the selection of courses each term to complete their chosen concentration(s).

The minimum overall total credits required for the BS degree in Education is 124, although concentrations vary in overall credit requirements and students seeking certification for more than one grade band may have additional credits to complete requirements for their certification. 

Requirements


A. A minimum of 124 credits, including all General Education requirements and University of Michigan-Flint graduation requirements to earn a degree in Education.

B. The Education Major includes at least one selected concentration.

C. GPA of 2.7 or better at UM-Flint overall is required for progression through and completion of the program.

D. Approved application for the start of Year 3 field work.

E. Approved background checks at multiple points throughout the program.

F. Approved application for Student Teaching Internship, and for certification, requirements in the section Information for Teacher Certification.

G. Assessment of professional dispositions, a minimum of four times during the program. Those who do not meet dispositional expectations may be required to fulfill a professional development plan and/or may be removed from the program.

H. Courses in First Aid and in Adult/Child CPR taken from a state-approved vendor: michigan.gov/documents/mde/Approved_First_Aid_and_CPR_Providers_397544_7.pdf (for certification).

Policies


  • A student who earns an unsatisfactory grade (i.e., a grade less than what is necessary for program credit) twice in the same required Education course, except for a course in student teaching, will be dismissed from the Education program.
  • A student who withdraws or earns a failing grade in student teaching twice will not be recommended for teacher certification. The student may still be eligible to receive a degree without certification if all other degree requirements are met.

  • All SEHS General Education requirements  
    (Requirements in English Composition, Financial and Quantitative Reasoning (FQ), Fine Arts (F), Natural Sciences (N/NL), Social Sciences (S), and Capstone (CAP) are fulfilled by program requirements as indicated; students make their own course selections to complete requirements in Global Studies (GS), Humanities (H) and Technology (T).  If UNV 100 is required, the offering “So You Want to Change the World” is recommended, but others are accepted.)

A student who fails to successfully complete student teaching may be eligible to receive a degree without certification.  Working with the advisor, the student elects additional courses, which must including a capstone course, to complete 124 credits.  A list of pre-approved courses appears here .

Prospective Honors Program students are required to complete all of the above Elementary Education requirements and University of Michigan-Flint Honors Program  Requirements, to include:

Honors Program students are urged to acquaint themselves as early as possible with the requirements above as well as with the particular procedures for acceptance into the Elementary Education Honors Program.
